inspirations Art in focus: Kathe Kollwitz
When looking for inspiration for my work I revisited an artist from my freshman year. Kathe Kollwitz is someone I learned a lot about and I remembered her deeper meanings in her art. Kollwitz focuses her art on her own trauma and anxieties from her own life. This really spoke to me because often I struggle with my own anxiety. I got a lot of my inspiration on how much meaning she puts into each of her art works. I based my artwork off two of hers. The first one was “call of death” I liked how simply yet meaning fully the art work is. I also roughly based it on “self portrait” because she based off her anxiety and that was the main focus of my work. |

planning
experimentationI tried a few different drawings before choosing my final.
I tried to play with the eyes a lot because i was going to carve them out and i wanted to convey emotion without the actual eyes being there I tried different hair two of the sketches having the hair down and one up, I was really debating if I should have the hair up since i was doing a self portrait and i always wear my hair up. In the end i decided not to because of time. |
I did a few sketches of just eyes and eyebrows because I really wanted to practice showing emotion just with those two feature without relying on the full face ti get the emotions I wanted.
processI started with my slate and my final image. I used my pencil to mark the back of my final sketch to transfer it onto my slate
then i took my craving tool and started to remove the spots I wanted to carve away. I spent a lot of time on craving alone. I wanted to make sure it was how i wanted it to look. I used a sharpie to color out the parts i still wanted to carve to make sure if was how i wanted. when i finally got it how i wanted to look i started to ink my project. I did many attempts on inking my project a lot of them did just not turn out, weren't how i wanted, not enough ink or i need to carve my lines deeper. once i was finally happy I made sure to a line my project and ink it for the final time |
critiquecomparing my work to my inspirations work
similarity'ssimilarity of my art to my inspirations art are:
both focus on one figure, in both art works there is only one figure shown The meaning behind the art, both me and Kathe Kollwitz based our work off our anxiety One of the inspiration pictures was also a self portrait differencesDifferences are that the other art work i based mine off wasn't a self portrait
also as it wasn't a block print |
reflection
When it comes to my work of art i wanted to show my inner anxiety. every time i make something I want to have a meaning behind the art work, no matter if its big or small. I really like showing my inner feels throughout my art because its easier to express then using my words and i did so throughout this project
if i were to do anything again i would make sure it looked more like something kathe kollwitz would make since she inspired me
