Title: thinking with your heart
Size: 20in x 40in
Medium: watercolor
Completion: july 2023
The painting is a representation of how people can think with their
heart and not their head. A lot of people make feeling based decisions
and dont always think about what can happen after making them.
I made a painting to show this. I made a thought bubble to represent the thoughts that going through someone head in a kind of cartoon-ish way and then made a heart to put in the center of it, to make it "thinking with your heart.
inspiration
My inspiration is Chaos of the mind by katy Tackes and how it focuses on the mind in a different light
It shows it in a way that it abstract and full of emotions, by using colors and different strokes to represent the mind as something uncontrollable I took this and thought of how people always say other think with their hearts and not their heads and connected the two, because you dont always make the most thoughtful decisions
My painting however was not as abstract as my inspiration

planning
I started by sketching out my ideas for the painting, originally i was going to draw a heart and a brain to show that more people value the decisions their heart makes over their brain, however i didnt like that idea so i changed it to just thinking if your heart. I then tried to draw a heart and then drew a thought bubble.
I wanted to represent this in a way that would be easy to make into a psychical work of art. I didnt know how to show the difference in value between a brain and a heart because both parts are valuable to the body.

experimentation
This was my first time ever drawing a heart that was supposed to look like a real human heart. I did a practice sketch to start went and then used a reference. I think the final version f the heart came out pretty good for my first time drawing one. I used watercolor with this painting to experiment more with them and work more in depth with them.
I started off by doing my planning sketches first, for this project I already had the paper and materials i needed so i didnt need to prep anything before hand. I then went in and did a practice sketch of the heart i wanted to make, however it didnt go that well so I found a reference and went form their. I then finally made something i was happy with and cut it out and then went in and water colored the drawing. While I was letting that dry I cut out a thought bubble shape, I then added some grey shadowing to add some detail to the thought bubble. I went in with more detail with ore paint for the heart and when I was finally done I traced the heart and added darker details with pen.
similarities: both paintings focus on the mind being a emotion filled place
both are not based on logical thinking
they are both done to show a persons thinking process and how emotions are brought into it
differences: the inspiration is abstract mine is not.
My art focuses on how the heart does a lot of someones emotion based decisions the inspiration is representing the chaos that can be someones mind/inner thoughts.

reflection
Im really happy about how the heart came out for this artwork. I spent a lot of time trying to figure how to make the heart and how to make it look good. However if I could go back and change anything I would change how I brought into the thinking aspect of the art work. The thought bubble is kinda funny compared to how realistic the heart is however I think I could have come up with something better and put more time in that part.
act response questions
1.)Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork: The cause-effect relationship is what happens when you make emotion based decisions
2.)What is the overall approach (point of view) the author from your research has regarding the topic of your inspiration My overall approach is to show the difference in how some people think. Some people think more emotionally than others.
3.)What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? People have different thought processes fro other people, no two minds are exactly the same.
4.)What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The mind is complex and will never be the same from person to person.
5.) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? That someones decisions are not always thought through, some people are more emotion driven than other people and that influences their thoughts.
