inspiration |
My inspiration for this project was Louis Kahn, because of his more abstract buildings. He wanted to create buildings with strong structures with meanings. He wanted his buildings to serve a purpose, a reason for being to use them. I want my out door class room to be used to let people be comfortable for those who are overwhelmed in everyday classes. I was heavily inspired by his want for purpose for his creations

Planning
I stared by getting ideas from my pears around me. When I spoke to them two things came up one, that they hated the seating in their classes and two, that in big groups (like in their class) they feel uncomfortable, like they are unable to contribute to class discussions because of the lack comfort. I worked with theses ideas to come up with the idea with putting chars with wheels inside classrooms as well has sketching out a building that is smaller than a regular classroom (so less people would fit) to try to meet a comfort level for others.
I want to be able to make a space for those who don't feel comfortable in larger classroom settings so they can still have a place to learn. after more and more thought however I focused on designing a better chair for the classrooms because while class size is an issue, more people that I talked to talked about how chairs in their class were a major problem in their lives. |
experimentation
Most of experimentation was done with a teacher at MIAD, Thornton. With him we started by learning how to draw straight lines without using a ruler. We used dots to mark were are lines would go, and then used a hand motion to start making straight lines. We then used this skill to develop it more into making squares. We would do this over and over to learn how to make our squares even all by hand. We then learned how to draw a circle using these squares. With these three skills we started to learn and make lay outs.
We made ones of our art room table, ones of our rooms, we even larned how to draw a chair and cup with this method. This was helpful because by then i decided to focus more on my chair design then a full classroom. We did this to help improve our formatting and layouts for our final work for this project. We also learned how a good way to layout our poster was, how to make it looks good aesthetically

Outside of this practice i worked on my method of drawing chairs. At first the bottom of the chair and the overall placement of parts of the chair was off on my drawings , they just didn't look right. I spent time working and practicing my method of drawing chair to one that looks more like an actual chair in real life and less of one you'd maybe see on a cartoon |

critique
At the start of my project I was using my inspiration to work negative spaces into an outdoor classroom so in that way
my original idea for a building for an outdoor classroom was similar to the buildings I was inspired by. I would have had the negative spaces like
my inspiration to create a source for natural light to come into the building. However I didn't go with my original Idea, instead listening to the
responses I got from my classmates and worked on an ideal chair. So my work moved away from my inspiration and became something different.
Instead of using the negative space I tried to make something that would be comfortable for more than one type of person. In a way my finial product is similar to the buildings bedcause they were made for more than just one type of person. Anyone can use the buildings .

At the start of this project I really didn't know what I wanted to do. I realized I needed to take a step back and ask my classmates what they thought of our classrooms now. I was not a fan of how I was going about my classroom Ideas before however once I started thinking about how much the chairs at school suck, with the help of the people I asked , I became really interested and invested in what I was doing. I personally really hate a lot of the chairs at school and hearing those around me agree was enough to make me passionate to create a new chair that could be used to help my classmates. If I could go back and do anything over again I would have definitely spent less time working on a building then I did with my chair. I did not like what I was doing with designing the whole room but once I focused on just the chair and how I can finally fixed the problems i have with the chairs in my classrooms at school, I was able to come up with great ideas to make a helpful tool for a new classroom. Overall though I did like this project and how it allowed me to make my ideas for how to improve the classrooms we have known.
act questions
1.)Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork: The cause-effect relationship is that having a good space to learn and having a comfortable seating is a major way to improve the want to be in the classroom itself and the actual learning coming from the classroom.
2.)What is the overall approach (point of view) the author from your research has regarding the topic of your inspiration My overall approach is that if someone can be seated comfortably in class then they will be less likely to want to leave the classroom and will be able to learn better in that environment.
3.)What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? Students value their comfort level in a classroom and it says a lot about how much information they are actually taking in when they are in the classroom.
4.)What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? What are the things that make a chair so comfortable and how can those things be inserted into the classroom environment without taking up a huge amount of space.
5.) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? The main problem students are having with the chairs is the pain it causes to their backs (if they have no back support on the chairs) and the material that is being used on the chairs.
